Puffins are one of the most charming and iconic birds found in Iceland, particularly noted for their striking appearance and vibrant beaks. Known as "lundi" in Icelandic, these seabirds nest in colonies along the coastal cliffs and rocky islands, making Iceland one of the best places in the world to observe them, especially during the breeding season from April to August.
The Atlantic puffin (Fratercula arctica) is the species that populates the region. They are about the size of a small seabird, with a distinctive black and white plumage, a brightly colored orange and yellow beak, and short, stout bodies. Their playful and clumsy demeanor on land, coupled with their graceful flying abilities, captures the hearts of many visitors.
Iceland is home to approximately 60% of the world's puffin population, and popular viewing locations include the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), Látrabjarg cliffs, and several areas along the Snæfellsnes Peninsula.
