On the opposite side of Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is the Diamond Beach.
Diamond Beach, or Jökulsárlón Beach, is a stunning natural wonder located near the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon on the South Coast of Iceland. This unique beach gets its name from the sparkling ice chunks that wash ashore from the lagoon, resembling diamonds scattered across the black volcanic sand. The contrast of the crystalline ice against the dark sand creates a breathtaking visual spectacle.
The icebergs that make their way to Diamond Beach are remnants of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, the neighboring glacier tongue, which calves into the lagoon, producing large chunks of ice that float before eventually drifting out to sea. Some of these icebergs are small, while others can be quite large, and they often take on fascinating shapes as they erode over time in the ocean.
The beach is especially enchanting during sunrise and sunset when the light casts a warm glow on the ice and sand. Wildlife enthusiasts might also spot seals swimming in the nearby lagoon or seabirds soaring above.
This beach lends its name from the giant icebergs that stands tall on the black sand beach and absorbing the natural light to reflect resembling diamonds. The original name is Breiðamerkursandur, which is a glacial outwash plain. Breiðamerkursandur, here sandur means the sandy beach. The icebergs that fill up the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon crashes up on the shore and that results in creating a stunning contrast with volcanic black sand. The icebergs land on the shore from the nearby lagoon and wash up on black sand that creates a visually attractive sight to witness. The big boulders are naturally polished and sculpted by the wind and water that makes it shine bright in contrast with the black sand. The natural contrast created by the crystal ice against black sand is simply jaw-dropping.
The Diamond Beach is the perfect place for nature-lovers and it attracts photographers from around the world each year. The Diamond beach is indeed a sight to behold, and is home to seals and many other wild-life animals. If you look out you can definitely see seals up on the beach or swimming in the glacier lagoon. This is a fantastic destination to visit at any time of the year.
See you soon!
