In Iceland there are many churches. Those in the villages are generally very small and typically either painted white with a red roof or completely black. The church near the Krýsuvík geothermal area, called Krýsuvíkurkirkja, is worth a short detour. It is a very small and old wooden church. It was built in 1857 and used as a parish church until 1929. It has since served as a residence. It stands on a spacious site surrounded by ancient tombs, of which mostly only the slightly raised, grassy mounds of earth can be seen. A beautiful entrance gate leads to the site. Fortunately there are no lights to illuminate it and it is therefore possible to photograph it with the northern lights in all its beauty.
