Þórsmörk (Thorsmork)

þórsmörk is a magical lush oasis surrounded by glaciers and beautiful highlands located in the south of Iceland. It is a place with such magnificent beauty that no adjective can do it justice. But to reach the base camp you have to travel several kilometers of dirt road and cross many rivers, some of which are quite deep, especially the last one. From the base camp there are several paths, some of which can be covered in 3-4 days.

Þórsmörk, often referred to as Thorsmork, is a stunning valley located in the southern highlands of Iceland, nestled between the glaciers of Tindfjallajökull and Eyjafjallajökull. Named after the Norse god Thor, Thorsmork is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, characterized by lush greenery, rugged mountains, glacial rivers, and glorious sunsets. This unique environment is created by the interplay of volcanic activity and glacial melt, resulting in rich biodiversity and spectacular views. The area is a popular destination for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts, offering a variety of trails ranging from easy walks to challenging hikes. The landscapes of Thorsmork are home to some of Iceland's most stunning hiking trails. Two of the most popular trails in Iceland, Fimmvorduhals and Laugavegur, begin or end in Thorsmork. These multi-day hiking routes require a reasonable level of fitness and some preparation.

Fimmvorduhals is a 30-kilometer trail that takes you into the hills beneath the Eyjafjallajokull volcano and to the volcanic craters of Magni and Modi, which erupted in 2010.

The 55-kilometer Laugavegur trail takes you from Thorsmork to Landmannalaugar, home to an incredible wealth of hot springs and vibrantly colored rhyolite mountains.

There are also numerous shorter hiking trails within Thorsmork, ranging from an hour to a full day. Hiking to the summit of Valahnukur mountain is a popular and accessible activity in Thorsmork, rewarding those who make the climb with incredible panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Thorsmork is a valley and mountain range between the Krossa, Thronga, and Markarfljot rivers, but locals often use the name Thorsmork to refer to a much larger region surrounding it.

Like other locations in Iceland's highlands, Thorsmork is only accessible during the summer months. The road to the area is rugged, so if you wish to explore the region on your own, you'll need to rent a four-wheel drive vehicle.
